Folded sheets push the middle pages out past the cover. Each sheet is cut a little narrower toward the middle so the edge comes out even; thicker paper needs more.

Good to know

Pages are scaled to fit with room to cut, so the finished book comes out a few millimetres smaller than full A5 or A4. The exact size shows above once you pick a file.
Color keeps the PDF's own text and drawings, so it stays sharp. Black and white turns each page into a 300 dpi grey image, so the printer uses black ink only.
Sideways pages are turned to fit, and pages of other sizes are fitted inside the page without stretching.
Links, comments and other clickable parts of the PDF are left out.
